Some people got the real problems

Confession time, sometimes I question whether there really is a God. Not because of all the suffering in the world, which seems to be the standard reason people have doubts. But because the Bible says things like…

“For God so loved the world he have his one and only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

And

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish…”

And I’m like, really God? Do you really love everybody? I find it hard to get my head around, because I myself despair of the human race on a daily basis. If I were God I’d probably have given up right around 1933, if not earlier, and just left us all to it.

I had one of my despairing of the human race moments yesterday, when I read the comments section on an article reporting the shooting of a dog at Auckland Airport.

Don’t get me wrong. I love dogs. We own one, and the fact that The Accountant is willing to fund the vaccinations and health checks and food requirements and various ongoing costs of said dog is a testament to how much we love dogs. It was a sad and unfortunate thing to happen.

But more than sadness, I felt angry.

Just last week news broke that the world is on the brink of the worst humanitarian crisis since 1945, with 20 million people facing death from starvation and disease. I read a heart breaking article which said the problem is so bad in parts of Nigeria, largely thanks to Boko-Haram, that some communities have “lost all their toddlers.”

Except they didn’t lose them. They died. All of their precious beautiful children died from starvation and associated disease.

This hardly caused a ripple in my Facebook news feed. No body felt strongly enough to share it.

Yet a random dog is killed at Auckland Airport and it was literally all I saw in my news feed the entire day. Everyone lost their minds.

There are not enough “eye roll” or “shake my head” GIFs in the world to sum up how I felt.

What is wrong with us?

Seriously, what is wrong with us?

It made me think of the lyrics in a current top 50 song, some people got the real problems. We don’t have to look to West Africa to find these people.

Yesterday, someone sat in a Dr’s office and was told they have cancer.

Yesterday, someone found out a loved one had taken their own life.

Yesterday, a police officer was asked to fulfil their duty to maintain public safety, and was called “absolutely disgusting” by thousands of strangers online for doing so.

So, if hearing about a dog being shot was the worst thing that happened to you yesterday, be grateful, you had a great day.

And please remember,

Some people got the real problems.
